United States U23 team set to feature in the 2023 ΔΕΗ Tour of Hellas
The United States U23 team which will take part in this year's ΔΕΗ Tour of Hellas was unveiled.
The roster consists of U23 athletes with the exception of 25-year-old Tyler Stites, the sole rider of the team with an active professional contract with Project Echelon Racing (UCI Continental Team).
The participation of these young athletes in international competitions, such as the Tour of Hellas, works as an important criterion for the selection of the team that will represent the USA in the UCI U23 World Championship.
The team’s line-up includes Sean Christian (b. 2002), Gabriel Shipley (2002), Leo Gullickson (2003), Brody McDonald (2002), Tyler Stites (1998), and Fin Gullickson (2000).
Four of the six athletes on the contingent compete for Aevolo (Christian, Shipley, Gullickson, McDonald), a team that traditionally invests in the development of young American riders. In 2022 the team renounced the professional status (UCI Continental Team) they held between 2017-22, due to financial reasons.
The team got their first taste of a cycling race in Greece with their participation in two races, in Rhodes. Leo Gullickson ranked 28th in the Visit South Aegean Islands race (2.2), Sean Christian was 50th and Gabriel Shipley 80th. In the Tour of Rhodes (2.1), Brody McDonald finished 2nd in Stage 1 which ended in Kalamonas.
Michael Creed, a former professional rider and development coach is the Directeur sportif of the team. The 42-year-old selector knows well all the U23 riders from their stint in Aevolo, where he served as the Team Manager since their inception.
As an athlete, Creed competed for US Postal Service in 2004 and for Discovery Channel Pro Team in 2005 (the year US Postal Service changed their name) alongside great names of that time, such as Paolo Savoldelli, Max van Heeswijk and George Hincapie. He called it a day in 2013.
